Concert by John Hammond
With a career that spans over three decades, John Hammond is one of handful
of white blues musicians who was on the scene at the beginning of the first
blues renaissance of the mid-’60s. That revival, brought on by renewed interest
in folk music around the U.S., brought about career boosts for many of the great
classic blues players, including Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, and
Skip James. Some critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and
Hammond does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica
playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence. Tickets: $17
general, $15 members.

Concert by The April Verch Band
The April Verch Band, with April at the helm on the fiddle, delivers richly
textured phrasing on traditional roots tunes, bluegrass and newgrass melodies,
jazz-influenced compositions, and country music. When April trades her fiddling
for the rhythmic art of stepdancing, the band takes on the sound of the old
lumber camp halls where those without instruments created rhythms with their
feet. The metal taps on April’s shoes generate exhilarating cadences that
enhance her traditional Ottawa Valley arrangements. It’s even more impressive
when April continues playing intricate rifts on her fiddle while dancing the
rhythmic pulse that drives the tune. The overall effect on her audiences is
electrifying. Tickets: $15 general, $13 members.

Concert by The Special Consensus
The Special Consensus repertoire features original compositions by band
members and professional songwriters (such as “Dusk ’Til Dawn” and “Margarita
Breakdown”). The repertoire also includes traditional bluegrass standards (songs
by Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, etc.) and songs by artists from other musical
genres (such as “Blue Skies” by Irving Berlin). As a result of this musical
diversity, The Special Consensus has performed at the most traditional bluegrass
festivals and has also been the band to bridge the gap between traditional and
progressive bands at more diverse festivals and fairs. Their driving music will
have you tapping your toes long after the concert is done! $15 general
