Originally from Auburn, New York, Dan resided in Thailand and Korea before coming to settle in Avoca. Cultural Landscape: A River’s Full Expression
The Wisconsin Humanities Council and The River Valley Community Learning Foundation proudly present Cultural Landscape: A River’s Full Expression with featured speaker Geri Weinstein-Breunig. Geology, geography, history, and ecology mold the character of moving water. Humanity, too, leaves its lasting imprint. Together, they create a cultural landscape—the full expression of a river or stream flowing by. It includes the natural and cultural features giving Wisconsin waters a special character and temperament. Using rivers of glaciated Wisconsin, we explore a series of cultural landscapes—each reflecting a binding relationship between people, land, and water. Beginning with cultural landscapes of indigenous peoples, we explore the connections between people and water and discover how and why they endure today. This program is free and open to the public and is supported by the Wisconsin Humanities Council, with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the State of Wisconsin, and individual donors.

Workshop: “Waking Your Color Eye” Exploring Color & Story in Mixed Media Fiber
This workshop is for anyone with a desire to stretch their creative spirit. In a fun, open, and respectful atmosphere, participants will explore color relationships through making a mixed media fiber piece of choice... e.g., cushion, wall piece, vessel, etc. Through supportive guidance and exercises, participants will: learn to banish the self-critic and give oneself the permission to create; explore color intuitively, through all the senses as well as through emotion, relationship, texture, vibration, etc.; keep a color journal; experiment in mixed media fiber: beads, collage, stitching, surface design, etc.; and translate story to images. We use story because it is about memory, connection, curiosity, mystery, creating the fabric of our lives. Emphasis is on play and process. Please bring your imaginative heart! The Lighter Side of Life in the Country, a program & book signing with Jerry Apps
The Midwest in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s was a very special place where parents and children worked side by side and neighbors stuck by each other through good times and disaster. Audiences will hear about the author’s own adventures peddling rutabagas and discovering cuss words; and they will be introduced to Felix, the intrepid barn cat, Nancy, the obstinate cow, and Fanny, and extraordinary collie whose role on the farm was as important as that of any human. Within each story we see how loving and supremely educational growing up on a farm can be, for it is here that youngsters learn not only how to take the heads off chickens and to drive tractors like grown-ups, but also to deal with illness, disability, and death. This program is free and open to the public. Jerry will sign your books, or you may purchase one of his many books immediately before and after the program.

River Valley High School Student Council Play: “The Moonstone”
Adapted from the classic Wilkie Collins novel by local playwright Bruce G. Bradley. The novel, set in Victorian England and pre-dating the better known Sherlock Holmes stories by nearly 20 years, has long been regarded as a crime classic. In fact, T.S. Eliot once described the book as “the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels.” Drawing on the original text and incorporating Collin’s staged version, Bradley came up with a play that was chosen by the student council at RVHS for their spring production. Tickets, which are on sale at the Spring Green General Store and Nina’s, are $7 for adults, and $5 for seniors and students.

Artists in Historic Residences
Jeanne Lambin, Wisconsin Field Services Coordinator for the National Trust for Historic Preservation will lead this presentation. Since historic preservation took root in the United States, artists have been a part of it. Old houses, commercial and industrial buildings provided unique and affordable places to live. Artists have often played a critical role in transforming historic communities from a neglected collection of ramshackle buildings to a highly desirable place to live. This workshop will cover the basics of historic preservation, provide information on grants and incentives that are available to owners of historic properties, discuss how non-profit organizations can use historic properties as artists live/work space, how communities like Paducah, Kentucky are marketing themselves to artists and how books like Richard Florida’s, “The Rise of the Creative Class” are recognizing the important role of creativity in creating vibrant communities. Free. Refreshments will be served. (For more information: National Trust for Historic Preservation http://www.nationaltrust.org/)

“My History and My Time as an Apprentice, and My Architectural Experience”
In 1932, Frank Lloyd Wright founded the Taliesin Fellowship, a school of architecture and way of life that has prospered for over seventy years, thirty years after Wrights’ death. A truly unique experience for Wright enthusiasts will occur on Sunday, June 5th, when architect, author, and former Taliesin fellowship member, Edgar Tafel, who joined the Taliesin Fellowship in its first year of existence, will speak about his work and life at Taliesin. Edgar Tafel apprenticed directly to Wright for nine years (1932-1941). He was there when the columns for the Johnson Wax building in Racine were tested and when Fallingwater was born in idea and built upon a stream in Pennsylvania. Tafel was there at Taliesin, when it was the “laboratory” for Frank Lloyd Wright’s concepts. Tafel shares in remarkable detail his personal time with Frank Lloyd Wright as the author of two books: “Years with Frank Lloyd Wright Apprentice to Genius” and “Frank Lloyd Wright- Recollections by Those Who Knew Him”. Tafel will present “My History and My Time as an Apprentice, and My Architectural Experience”, a slide and lecture presentation, on Sunday, June 5th at the Hillside Theatre at Taliesin, Spring Green, Wisconsin. Following the 3:00PM slide presentation, a book signing and reception featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to visit with Mr. Tafel will be held inside the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, (the former Spring Green Restaurant). Cost for the event is $100 dollars per person ($50 is tax deductible). Deadline for reservations is Friday, May 27. Proceeds will be used exclusively for the restoration and preservation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin.

“Music In the Parks”
Singer/storyteller Celia performs at Spring Green Area Arts Coalition’s Music-In-The-ParksFeaturing Singer and Storyteller Celia

Grab the family, pack the cooler and lawn chairs and plan to relax and enjoy this summer’s “Music In the Parks” community concert series. Celia is a cross between an earthy Enya, Tori Amos, and Gilda Radner! A red-headed Renaissance woman, Celia is a singer/songwriter, actress, and storyteller who has perfected the magic of combining the silly and the sacred. She commands the stage with her one-woman show, which features her clear, dexterous voice and includes singing, acting, storytelling and plenty of humor. The Spring Green Area Arts Coalition’s “Music-In-The-Parks” is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Sauk County Art, Humanities and Historical Preservation Committee and other area community organizations. Future concerts are scheduled for Spring Green and other Sauk County areas. Everyone is encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and beverages. Admission is free.
