Three Slide Lectures on Islamic Civilization
Using an audio-visual format with two projectors, Brian Walton tells the story of the rise and spread of Islam and its many cultural expressions over a thousand years. A series of visions and mystical experiences of God (Allah) propelled Mohammed to dictate the teachings he received, written down as the Koran. Islam, meaning “to surrender,” “to make peace,” was begun in Mecca, where he lived. From there, this new religion quickly spread throughout the Middle East, across northern Africa to Spain, and as far as India. Islam implies not only a belief and legal system but also an art and architecture, crafts, calligraphy, literature and music—an entire culture and way of life. These lectures are rich with images painted to illustrate Muslim literature—animal fables, humorous scoundrels, love stories, courtly intrigues, and chronicles of kings. Many delights of architecture, taken during Brain’s travels over the years, range from Egypt, Turkey and Jerusalem to Iran. Since he has just returned from a month in India, Brian will also include visuals of Mogul architecture and the Taj Mahal, built as a monument of love by a grieving Shah for his favorite wife. Today, my photography is both ‘art’ and a way to support organizations and people of interest to me. Slide Lecture on Islamic Civilization
Admission: Free.

Auditions for “1776”
The Community Players of Southwestern Wisconsin will need 25 men and 2 women for this play. The seminal event in American history blazes to vivid life in this most unconventional of Broadway hits. It’s the summer of 1776, and the nation is ready to declare independence... if only our founding fathers can agree to do it! “1776” follows John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Richard Henry Lee and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia as they attempt to convince the members of the second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence. Involving a sizeable, largely male ensemble with no chorus, the show features a striking score by Sherman Edwards, which is modest in its vocal requirements, and a book by Peter Stone, which is legendary in its craftsmanship. “1776” is a funny, insightful and compelling drama.

Artist’s Reception: “Taliesin Images”
An artist's reception for area photographer Lance Clark Bell and his current installation titled “Taliesin Images” at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center. Artist’s Statement: “I graduated from the University of WI-Stout in Fine Art in 1972. While studying at Stout, black and white photography was offered through the art department as part of the art curriculum. It was also during this semester that I had the rare opportunity to study with Ansel Adams as he was an artist in residence and a guest of the photography department. The effect Ansel Adams has had on photography is legendary and the time I spent on his field trips and in the classroom was of great influence. I have been involved with the photographic medium for the past 30 years in one form or another. Although the majority of my work is with black and white, I use color to define some aspects of my work. The power and emotion contained in my black & white images are arrived at through the traditional use of composition and tonal values. However, I do like to experiment with allowing the viewer into the image to explore their own philosophy of art. This is usually arrived at through the use of abstract subject matter in some of my images. ...Having lived in Wyoming Township, less than a mile from Taliesin® for the last 25 years I have been fortunate to be able to observe Taliesin® in all of its grandure throuought the seasons.” Free.

The Sneeze: Chekhov Comedies at Taliesin
The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture will present The Sneeze, Plays and Stories by Anton Chekhov in a workshop production at Hillside Theater at Taliesin, Spring Green, Wisconsin on Friday, August 25 and Saturday, August 26, 2006. Anton Chekhov began his literary career by writing short comic stories for popular weekly magazines. The Sneeze includes four of these stories, translated and adapted for the stage by contemporary playwrights Michael Frayn and Wendy Wasserstein. Chekhov wrote the fifth piece in the evening, The Proposal, as a short play. Chekhov’s comic characters struggle with the stuff of everyday life – disappointments, disruptions and disputes. He once said, “Any idiot can face a crisis – its day to day living that wears you out.” Both Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky admired these early short satires and comedies. The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture Performance Workshop introduces architecture apprentices to performance skills, literature, theatrical design and dramatic structure. The company of players includes Taliesin apprentices and staff members, and players from the local community. Performances are at 7:30 pm and there is a suggested donation of $5 for admission. The Hillside Theater is in Hillside Home School three miles south of Spring Green on Highway 23.
