Family Farms by Aron L. Meudt
MILWAUKEE… “Family Farms,” an exhibition of photography by Clyde-native and
MIAD-senior Aron L. Meudt opens April 20 at the Milwaukee Institute of Art &
Design, Wisconsin’s only independent, four-year college of art and design.
“Family Farms” will continue through May 12 at the college’s Third Ward Campus,
273 E. Erie Street. The gallery is open from 10am to 5pm Tues-Sat. The show will
also have an opening reception on April 20, Milwaukee’s Gallery Night, beginning
at 5pm. Admission is free. Meudt’s talent and passion for the farming community
in Southwest Wisconsin began at age six, when she began photographing farmsteads
and rural landscapes for her school fair with the help of her father. In 2003
she graduated from River Valley High School, was voted most artistic in her
class and was also awarded a scholarship to begin her bachelor of fine arts
studies at MIAD. “Family Farms” continues Meudt’s passion for the farming
community. Her photographs show the current condition and atmosphere of today’s
disappearing family farms in Southwest Wisconsin. Meudt considers herself a
documentary photographer and says that she “likes to speak my convictions
through my photographs.” This is Meudt’s second professional exhibition; her
first was held at the Clyde Community Center in October 2006 and focused on
rural life specifically in the area of Clyde in which she grew up. Meudt will
exhibit her work, part of her senior thesis project, in MIAD’s eagerly awaited
2007 Senior Exhibition. This year’s exhibition features 140 members of the
senior class and works in all of the college’s 11 majors. MIAD graduates will
receive their bachelor of fine arts degrees on May 12.

Not in My Woods: Identification & Control of Invasive Plants – Gigi La Budde
The third field day in the Spring Green Center for Creativity and Innovation’s
ongoing Landscape Project will help participants learn how to identify and
control some of the invasive plants that threaten their forests and fields. The
focus will be on non-native invasives, including garlic mustard, buckthorn,
exotic honeysuckle, and autumn olive, as well as native “nuisance species” such
as prickly ash, sumac, and brambles. In addition to displacing
native plants and wildlife, these “plants out of place” can drastically
affect the ecological and economic value of a landowner’s property. The field
day will be led by long time Spring Green resident Gigi La Budde, who is the
Ecologist and Education Coordinator for the Community Forestry Resource Center
based in Minneapolis. In 2006 La Budde received the Wisconsin
Invader Crusader award by the Governor’s Council on Forestry in recognition of
her professional efforts to control invasive species. There is no charge for the
field day, but pre-registration is encouraged. Before April 18 you may
register by emailing

Participants should bring an extra pair of shoes or be prepared to clean their

photographer and says that she “likes to speak my convictions through my
photographs.” This is Meudt’s second professional exhibition; her first was held
at the Clyde Community Center in October 2006 and focused on rural life
specifically in the area of Clyde in which she grew up. Meudt will exhibit her
work, part of her senior thesis project, in MIAD’s eagerly awaited 2007 Senior
Exhibition. This year’s exhibition features 140 members of the senior class and
works in all of the college’s 11 majors. MIAD graduates will receive their
bachelor of fine arts degrees on May 12.

Dead Write Productions presents: Dead In The Rough
Dead In The Rough, a new comedy mystery, for everyone who loves golf or
knows someone who does! Life is pretty idyllic at the Missing Links Golf Club.
Members enjoy beautiful greens and well-tended fairways, finishing their round
with a couple of cocktails at the Hole-in-One bar. But not everything is as
perfect as it seems, and when handsome golf pro Woody Driver reveals that he
is writing a memoir of his time at the Club, more than a few people are
worried about what he might reveal. Jealous husbands, scheming wives, and
conniving board members all seem to have issues with Woody. Everybody gets a
chance to tee off on their favorite suspect, and unscrupulous behavior is par
for the course. Tickets are $35 per person and include the show, a four-course
dinner, complimentary glass of wine, hot beverage, tax, and tip. Reservations
are essential and can be made by calling The Shed at 588-9049. A portion of
the ticket price will be donated to the River Valley schools golf program.

Grandpa’s Barn is Falling Down, Falling Down, Falling Down — Henk
Newenhouse & Jerry Apps
How to get the most out of the beauty of the natural landscapes we are
blessed with? How to encourage dialogue
about what is scenically beautiful? And
what happens when there are disagreements that dialogue isn’t able to resolve? These are some of the questions that will be explored in C4C’s
“Landscape Project,” which will kick off in a public way after the New Year
with a bi-weekly feature about “Landscape Dilemmas” to be published in the
Home News, followed by a series of field days in the late winter through early
autumn. The effort is part of a larger
project entitled “Putting Culture Back Into Agriculture” funded by a
UW-Extension Cross-Divisional Grant. C4C’s project, one of just four in the
state, is being coordinated by Dawn Ingham and Jeanne Patenaude. C4C
is shorthand for the Spring Green Center for Creativity and Innovation. There
is no charge. Everyone is welcome. Details to follow.

the Boston Elevated Subway which was erected in 1898, demolished 1987, then
shipped eight thousand miles away to be melted and re-formed into steel bars.

Living with a Prairie — Katie Abbot and Julie Kardatzke
The August Landscape Project Field Day promises to be very interesting and
useful. It seems with every year there is more interest in learning about native
prairie in the River Valley area. We hear about it and we see it as we drive
through the countryside. But what does a prairie contain, what meaning does it
have for us and if we do own property with prairie land, how do we blend in with
and optimize the native landscape with what we build? This is the subject Katie
Abbott and Julie Kardatzke will address at the Prairie Field day. Katie will
help us to recognize some common prairie plants, discuss the elements of the
ecosystem and how to take the vegetation and landscape into consideration when
building a home so as to reduce negative impacts and actually improve the
grasslands they have. Julie will discuss how to design a home or other building
to work with the characteristics of its site and with nature in general. The end
result is a building which is more beautiful, comfortable, satisfying and energy
efficient and which has a smaller negative impact on its surroundings and on the
larger world. This field day is the 7th of a series planned for 2007 as part of
the Center for Creativity and Innovation (C4C) Landscape Project partially
funded by a grant from the UW Department of Liberal Arts. FREE event. Everyone
is welcome.

SGAAC Film Festival at Hillside Theater
The Spring Green Area Arts Coalition and the the Frank Lloyd Wright School
of Architecture offers a series of films that explore
our interactions with the built and unbuilt environment, architecture and
nature. In tonight’s documentary,
“Rivers and Tides,” filmmaker Thomas Riedelsheimer follows the work of artist
Andy Goldsworthy as he creates pieces that interact with nature. Environmental
Sculptor Andy Goldsworthy is renowned for his work in the most ephemeral of
materials—ice, flowers, leaves and precariously balanced stones. “Rivers and
Tides” is the first documentary film, shot in four countries and in four
seasons, to capture both Goldsworthy’s art and process. Discussion by designer
Ari Georges will
follow the presentation which is free to the public. Donations welcome.

nearly nothing. Each performance will be unique and unpredictable, and will

“Going Native” Prairie Walk
The Landscape Project’s 8th field day will be hosted by Andrea Nelson on her
property northeast of Dodgeville in Wisconsin’s beautiful driftless area. Andrea
has a deep passion for and in-depth knowledge of prairies and 10 years of
experience restoring prairies both professionally and personally. She has
managed dozens of on-site prairie restoration projects, worked in several
prairie nurseries, and led hundreds of prairie burns. Her home is located in a
deep valley surrounded by rocky bluffs, with a creek running through the bottom
of the valley. She has nurtured the original prairieland and is slowly restoring
this abandoned farmland back to its natural beauty. For the walk, she has
several examples of plantings done with various methods, ranging from a small
garden to a 10-acre plot. She will explain the prep and planting methods used,
which ones work best under which circumstances, and the management necessary for
success. She describes her plantings as “works in progress, not perfect examples
of pristine prairie.” They “show what is possible and how to do it.” And, she
adds, “my gardens tend to be ‘wild,’ as I like to let Nature do most of the
designing.” The tour will include four prairie restoration scenarios: 1) native
prairie rejuvenation; 2) constructed rock garden prairie; 3) ridgetop sod cover
to prairie; and 4) bottomland cornfield to prairie. Participants are asked to
pre-register by September 6 by calling 588-2188, ext. 25 or emailing
landscapeproject@yahoo.com. The Landscape Project is sponsored by C4C and
partially funded by a UW Extension Cross-Divisional Grant. The field day is
free and all are welcome.

Southwest Wisconsin Local Food Producers Invited To Community Meetings About
New Initiative Called “Local Fare”
Southwest Wisconsin is fortunate to have top cheese makers, livestock

Continuing Education, will work to expand the visibility, availability, and
sales of these locally grown products in our region. Local Fare is holding a
series of community meetings throughout the region to introduce the project and
to hear directly from local producers about their goals for a Southwest
Wisconsin that celebrates local food. Expect pertinent information and a lively
conversation. Free event.

10 to 80, combines martial arts with musical drumming. As one of Japan’s
outstanding taiko drum ensembles, Hanedaiko is noted for a particularly physical

from jazz music. Hanedaiko has toured internationally, been featured on Japanese

C4C Field Day: Coloring Your Woods—Going Beyond the Green
It’s beginning to feel like fall—just
perfect for this appropriately timed C4C Field Day.
After an introduction by Derrick Gee (C4C
co-chair and field day coordinator) and photographer Charley Brigham, there will
be three 20 minute seminars to provide participants with a bounty of information
and illumination. Jim Birkemeier, owner of Timbergreen Forestry and a consulting

provide access and suitable habitat for new colorful plantings. He will include
information about equipment to use, safety considerations and information about
burning. Helen Birkemeier, author of Woodland Walkers Guide, a weekly column in
The Home News, and two books on Wisconsin wildlife, will suggest colorful
plant species including trees, vines, shrubs, and wildflowers, as well as
insects such as moths and butterflies. Helen will also discuss protection for
new plantings from deer, squirrels, raccoons, and mice. Bill Birkemeier,
Emeritus Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a “jack of all
trades” will talk about providing attractions for colorful wildlife in the form
of water (ponds), plantings of corn, fruit, and sunflowers, and erecting houses,
shelves and feeders. The morning will
conclude with a walk on a hiking trail from 10:40-11:30. There
is no charge. Everyone is welcome. Register for the field day at the email
address or phone number below. This field day

A Handmade Christmas
Throughout December, the Jura Silverman Gallery will be featuring ornaments,

Santas by Chris Belleau, woven wheat by Christl Iausly and birch bark angels by
Duane Radel. On December 7, 8, and 9, artist Rob Russell will be creating his
unique, colorful, lathe turned ornaments on site for visitors to observe. Known
for his fine finishes and original designs, Russell has been a full time artist
since 1979, producing a variety of decorative and functional pieces in native

American Folklife: A Commonwealth of Cultures
A photographic celebration of the extraordinary range of peoples and
heritages that are woven together in the rich cultural tapestry that is the
United States. This gathering of images and commentary from the American
Folklife Center in the Library of Congress explores some of the myriad folkways
that are often “hidden in full view” in daily activities—from cooking to playing
music—and in holiday and other special celebrations. These disparate cultural
expressions and approaches to daily life enrich the nation and make us truly a
Commonwealth of Cultures.
