Family Farms by Aron L. Meudt
MILWAUKEE… “Family Farms,” an exhibition of photography by Clyde-native and MIAD-senior Aron L. Meudt opens April 20 at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Wisconsin’s only independent, four-year college of art and design. “Family Farms” will continue through May 12 at the college’s Third Ward Campus, 273 E. Erie Street. The gallery is open from 10am to 5pm Tues-Sat. The show will also have an opening reception on April 20, Milwaukee’s Gallery Night, beginning at 5pm. Admission is free. Meudt’s talent and passion for the farming community in Southwest Wisconsin began at age six, when she began photographing farmsteads and rural landscapes for her school fair with the help of her father. In 2003 she graduated from River Valley High School, was voted most artistic in her class and was also awarded a scholarship to begin her bachelor of fine arts studies at MIAD. “Family Farms” continues Meudt’s passion for the farming community. Her photographs show the current condition and atmosphere of today’s disappearing family farms in Southwest Wisconsin. Meudt considers herself a documentary photographer and says that she “likes to speak my convictions through my photographs.” This is Meudt’s second professional exhibition; her first was held at the Clyde Community Center in October 2006 and focused on rural life specifically in the area of Clyde in which she grew up. Meudt will exhibit her work, part of her senior thesis project, in MIAD’s eagerly awaited 2007 Senior Exhibition. This year’s exhibition features 140 members of the senior class and works in all of the college’s 11 majors. MIAD graduates will receive their bachelor of fine arts degrees on May 12.

Not in My Woods: Identification & Control of Invasive Plants – Gigi La Budde
The third field day in the Spring Green Center for Creativity and Innovation’s ongoing Landscape Project will help participants learn how to identify and control some of the invasive plants that threaten their forests and fields. The focus will be on non-native invasives, including garlic mustard, buckthorn, exotic honeysuckle, and autumn olive, as well as native “nuisance species” such as prickly ash, sumac, and brambles. In addition to displacing native plants and wildlife, these “plants out of place”  can drastically affect the ecological and economic value of a landowner’s property. The field day will be led by long time Spring Green resident Gigi La Budde, who is the Ecologist and Education Coordinator for the Community Forestry Resource Center based in Minneapolis. In 2006 La Budde received the Wisconsin Invader Crusader award by the Governor’s Council on Forestry in recognition of her professional efforts to control invasive species. There is no charge for the field day, but pre-registration is encouraged. Before April 18 you may register by emailing landscapeproject@yahoo.com or by calling 608-588-2188, extension 25.  Participants should bring an extra pair of shoes or be prepared to clean their shoes before leaving the site in order to prevent the spread of garlic mustard seed.

How to get the most out of the beauty of the natural landscapes we are blessed with? How to encourage dialogue about what is scenically beautiful? And what happens when there are disagreements that dialogue isn’t able to resolve? These are some of the questions that will be explored in C4C’s “Landscape Project,” which will kick off in a public way after the New Year with a bi-weekly feature about “Landscape Dilemmas” to be published in the Home News, followed by a series of field days in the late winter through early autumn. The effort is part of a larger project entitled “Putting Culture Back Into Agriculture” funded by a UW-Extension Cross-Divisional Grant. C4C’s project, one of just four in the state, is being coordinated by Dawn Ingham and Jeanne Patenaude. C4C is shorthand for the Spring Green Center for Creativity and Innovation. There is no charge. Grandpa’s Barn is Falling Down, Falling Down, Falling Down — Henk Newenhouse & Jerry Apps
Everyone is welcome. Details to follow.
