American Folklife: A Commonwealth of Cultures
A photographic celebration of the extraordinary range of peoples and
heritages that are woven together in the rich cultural tapestry that is the
United States. This gathering of images and commentary from the American
Folklife Center in the Library of Congress explores some of the myriad folkways
that are often “hidden in full view” in daily activities—from cooking to playing
music—and in holiday and other special celebrations. These disparate cultural
expressions and approaches to daily life enrich the nation and make us truly a
Commonwealth of Cultures.

UW-Richland Theatre Auditions
The two-act comedy “The God of Isaac” by James Sherman has been selected as
the spring 2008 play to be presented by UW-Richland Theatre. Dave Timm will
serve as guest director for the production. “The God of Isaac” has been
described as “a warm, enjoyable search for roots, a search everyone in this
society can identify with.” In addition to the characters of Isaac and his
mother, Mrs. Adams, two male and two female actors play a variety of roles,
including iconic and classic characters from stage and screen. Roles are
available for three adult males and three adult females. Performances are
scheduled for March 7, 8 and 9. Those planning to audition will want to bring
their calendars to indicate any possible conflicts with rehearsals between the
beginning of February and production time.
In addition to those interested in acting, people who would like to be involved
behind the scenes—to work with sets, make-up, props, costumes, lights, and
more—are encouraged to come to auditions to make their interests known. As is
the tradition with UW-Richland Theatre, community people are welcome to audition
and participate behind the scenes, as are UW-Richland students.

Celtic Spirituality Workshop
The ancient Celts once populated much of the known world. They flowed
seamlessly with the energies of the land, the vagaries of time and the wisdom of
the gods. Today they still exist in the seven Celtic nations: Isle of Man,
Wales, Cornwall, Ireland, Scotland, Brittany and Galicia in Spain and in the
hearts and DNA of millions of decedents around the world. The workshop will
investigate what inspired them, connected them to all that is, gave birth to
their intricate knot work designs and fed their exuberance for life. Workshops
participants will be challenged to reach into this ancient past and to draw from
it personal inspiration for the present and a vision for the future. Be prepared
for some poetry and some fun. Fee: $30.

Film Lecture at Taliesin—Images & Sounds: How to Read Them
We are inundated by images. But that only makes them more, not less,
mysterious. We tend to accept the image as a mirror of the thing itself. But
images aren’t mirrors, they are interpretations of things constructed by
cameras, which see the world very differently from our eyes. We will make a
movie together in our first fifteen minutes and use it to ponder the strangeness
of images, and further, to analyze what happens to images when they are
juxtaposed with other images and sound is added. It is our hope that
participants will leave the workshop with a new understanding of, and
appreciation for, the extraordinary power of media in our lives. Tim Wright is
an award winning documentary filmmaker and teacher who lives in Boston. Tickets:

Film Course at Taliesin—Documentary Film Styles and Techniques: Past, Present
and Future
Some of the most widely seen films of the first decade of cinema were
documentaries. Now, after a long period of relative obscurity, they are
returning to the media forefront, in many new and questionable forms, on
television and in movie theaters. Along the way, we will evaluate various
documentary genres, including cinema verite (both American and French), the
compilation documentary, the subjective diary style and the multiple narrator
PBS style in terms of editing techniques, narrative strategies, and camera
styles. The instructor, Tim Wright, is a Boston filmmaker. His documentary
Conservation of Matter won both the New England Film/Video Festival and the U.S.
Small Format Film & Video Festival. He has taught media production and media
literacy workshops throughout New England for the last twenty years and for the
last three years has been teaching Visual Literacy at the Frank Lloyd Wright
School of Architecture at Taliesin as well. Tickets $35.
